James Brown's last visit to the Apollo Theater in Harlem was yesterday. Unlike the coverage of his death, the mainstream media is all over this story like gravy on rice. I guess it took a week for the producers to wake to the magnitude of Brown's passing.

In the quotes that made it into today's New York Times syndicated story, this humble white boy found the words he couldn't find on Christmas Day: Norman Brand of Harlem said "['Say it Loud -- I'm Black and I'm Proud'] really changed the attitude of most black people. It was like a wake-up call. Before that, if you were called black, it was like an insult."

America is different now because of James Brown. Most Americans just don't know it.
